Happy October. Three months until the end of the year? How the hell did that happen? The older I get the more I don’t understand the concept of time. Anyway, I’m fully in cosy soup mode now. And so therefore here is my definitive list on the hierarchy of my fave soups:
French Onion soup: I’ve only had this a handful of times, but anything with a layer of floating cheese gets my approval.
Minestrone soup: a simple yet classic soup, only to be consumed with croutons though. For the crunch factor.
Chicken and sweetcorn soup: obviously only from the local chinese takeaway/restaurant. Could eat this forever tbh.
Pho/Ramen: these go hand-in-hand, as the obvious perfect soups. Always my #1 choice when out and in need of a pit stop from gallivanting around town, but drops down in the list only because I haven’t quite mastered chopsticks yet (my bad).
Arroz Caldo: a filipino household staple, chicken and rice hearty goodness (I like mine with heaps of garlic!). Very much the best thing to have when feeling slightly poorly and you need an instant pick me up. 10/10 delicious.
Things I’ve enjoyed this week
Past Lives. Finally, this film was released in the UK and it did not disappoint. I was prepared for tears but I wasn’t prepared for this many tears. A beautiful film about childhood friends who drift apart when one emigrates from Korea to Canada, and then they reconnect later on in life. The aching whatifs, the bittersweet longings, the melancholic air, the complexities of identity. It’s a visual treat, with a beautiful score between the silences too. 10/10 would recommend. Bring tissues.
The Vampire Diaries. Look, blame the strikes or extreme boredom, but I had nothing to watch last month so thought I’d finally (13 years later!) watch this show. Somehow, even though vampires, witches and werewolves were right up my street in 2010, apparently younger me did have a life back then and couldn’t commit to a 22 episode television show. Also it was airing on ITV, which was the inferior terrestrial channel in my mind. Sorry. Anyway flash-forward to 2023 and I have watched two seasons (44 episodes!!) in the span of a couple of weeks. Ahh the joys of modern life. TVD has filled the void of a mindless background show with insane storylines and even insaner haircuts; and the nostalgic hit of 2010s indie bands. Remember White Lies?whatever happened to them?!
Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin. Well turns out the hype was real. This was a beautiful and sad and bittersweet and loving story about the friendship between two gamers Sam and Sadie, from childhood to adulthood. A very easy read that kept me up until 3am finishing the book and then instantly regretting my choice because why am I bawling my eyes out at that time when I have work in 5 hours?
Stand-up comedy. I love clowns. I love funny people. I love laughter. It’s not easy to do stand-up so I’m always very impressed by a comedian’s effort regardless if they are funny or not. If you do too, then I would recommend Angel Comedy Raw on Wednesdays…it’s free and there’s a host of comedians (unknown and sometimes known) trying out new material (good and sometimes bad).
Things I’ve not enjoyed this week
Sex Education S4 E1. I could only watch one episode of the new season, but what happened to this show?! I didn’t quite vibe with it for some reason…someone tell me if it gets any better?
Taylor Swift’s love life. No offence, but who gives a shit about some american footballer?
The End
Thanks for reading! bit boring this week sorry, let’s hope the cooler months will bring me more inspo.
